Deep in the heart of Guatemala’s Petén jungle lies one of the greatest archaeological treasures of the ancient Maya world—El Mirador, home to the towering La Danta pyramid, the largest known pyramid by volume in the world. Visiting this remote site is an adventure unlike any other, whether you arrive by helicopter or trek for days through dense jungle. Here’s what to expect from this unforgettable expedition.
El Mirador was once a thriving metropolis of the Preclassic Maya civilization (600 BCE–200 CE), predating even Tikal. Abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle, it remained hidden for centuries until its rediscovery.
There are two ways to get to El Mirador. The first option and the fastest way is by Helicopter, this is a great option for people with short time and unwilling to endure a strenous hike. It is also the luxurious option, and the most expensive. It is a 45-minute scenic flight from Flores, Peten, over endless jungle canopy with breathtaking areal views of hidden ruins and La Danta emerging from the trees. Once on site, there is a full day guided tour and box lunch before returning by air to Flores.
The second option is by foot. The classic way to reach El Mirador is a 5-day round-trip hike (about 40 km each way) through the Maya Biosphere Reserve. For this option, you need a guided expedition (mandatory) with mules carrying suplies, camping in the jungle under mosquito nets, wild encountres (monkeys, ecotic, birds and even a jaguar print), you will visit smaller ruins located along the way, like Nakbé and Tintal, and a sense of acomplishment when you get to El Mirador.
With both options, once you arrive, the ruins will leave you in awe. You will visit La Danta complex; the main pyramid, part of a triadic structure, sits atop an artificial platform. Climbing to the top rewards you with 360-degree jungle views—an unforgettable sight at sunrise or sunset. El Tigre, the second largest pyramid at El Mirador, with a steep climb leading to another stunning viewpoint. The Central Acropolis, a maze of palaces and plazas where Maya elites once lived. Ancient Murals and Steale, some structures still have traces of original pain and carvings. And last but not least, you will learn about the ancient causways (Sacbcob), mysterious white roads connecting ceremonial centres, its belevied to be the first highway made by man.
In this tryp wildlife and nature will be an important part of the tryp, you will have more chances to see it if you take the option to go by foot, but even if you travel by helicopter and do the one day tour you will have the chance to see or hear howler monkeys, toucans, jaguars, and the pristine rainforest.
There are some pros and cons to traveling by helicopter. Pors: saves time, unmatched views from aboe, ideal for thos with mobility concerns. Cons: Expensive, less immersive than the jungle trek.
There also pros and cons of traveling by foot. Pros: Deep immersion in nature and archeology, a tru adventure that will make you feel like and explorer, and budget friendly. Cons: Physically demanding due to heat, hiumidity and insects, basic camping conditions, and restricted meals options.
