There are places you see in magazines, and then there are places that take your breath away the moment you step foot in them. Tikal National Park is, without a doubt, the latter.
Usually people aren’t sure what to expect, if it is hard to get there, if there are a few ruins, but I can tell you is an experience that stays with you forever.
The journey begins with a smooth private transfer from Flores, arranged by Guatemala Journeys. While there are public options, having a dedicated driver means you can watch the sunrise over Lake Petén Itzá without worrying about schedules. The drive is about an hour, transitioning from the colorful streets of Flores to the deep, emerald green of the Petén jungle.
Walking through the park, the first thing you notice isn’t the stone—it’s the sound. The roar of howler monkeys and the songs of tropical birds create a prehistoric soundtrack.
Tikal was once one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya, reaching its peak between 200 and 900 AD. When you reach the Grand Plaza, standing between Temple I (The Great Jaguar) and Temple II, you truly feel the scale of this civilization. It’s not just archaeology; it’s a testament to human genius.
What You Can’t Miss: Temple IV, this is the tallest structure in the park. Climbing the wooden stairs to the top is a workout, but the reward is a panoramic view of the jungle canopy with the tops of other temples poking through the mist. It’s like a scene straight out of Star Wars (literally, it was filmed here!). The Lost World (Mundo Perdido), one of the oldest parts of the city with a unique architectural style. The Wildlife, keep your eyes peeled! You will see coatis, spider monkeys, toucans and other birds.
Tips: If you are afist-time visitor make sure you wear comfortable shoes, you will walk a lot. The paths are mostly flat but can be dusty or muddy. Hydration is key since the jungle humidity is real. Bring plenty of water. Go with a a Professional Guide, you can walk the paths alone, but you’ll miss the stories. A guide will explain the hieroglyphs and the “why” behind every stone. Go Early: The “Sunrise Tour” is famous for a reason. Watching the jungle wake up from the top of a pyramid is a bucket-list moment.
Fun Facts: The Jungle’s Secret, archaeologists believe there are still thousands of structures hidden under the mounds of earth and trees around Tikal. A Massive Metropolis, at its height, Tikal is estimated to have housed between 60,000 and 100,000 people. A UNESCO Pioneer, Tikal was the first site in the world to be declared a World Heritage site for both its cultural and natural importance.
