Thinking about hiking Acatenango? Well, there are some things you must take into account before doing it.
An important part is your physical condition; you will be trekking at a high altitude. The trail ascends to 3,976 meters (13,045 feet), with steep inclines and rough terrain, so a good level of fitness is crucial. Have in mind that it is a 5 to 6-hour ascent with significant elevation gain, cold temperatures (depending on your traveling dates, it could drop below freezing), altitude affects your breathing, and there are loose volcanic ash and steep slopes.
Before hiking, we suggest you train, do some cardio and strength training, take shorter hikes with elevation gain, and acclimate to the altitude by spending time in Antigua or similar areas before the trek.
Tours start with a drive from Antigua to La Soledad, where the trail starts. The trail will take you through four different ecosystems: farmlands, cloud forests, high alpine forests, and volcanic terrain.
Some people just do a one-day hike, but overnight stays are more popular. If you do the overnight hike, the base camp is located at around 3,600 meters, and you will have a clear view of Fuego Volcano erupting in the distance. At around 4:00AM you will be able to ascend the final 1.5 hours to the summit to see the sunrise.
The descent to the trailhead is about 2 to 3 hours. After the sunrise, you will return to the base camp, have breakfast, and start your descent to La Soledad base camp. Then the transportation will take you to Antigua.
Here are some tips to have in mind before hiking Acatenango Volcano: Pack light but essential: bring water, snacks, rain gear, warm layers, and a headlamp. Wear hiking boots; good footwear is crucial for navigating the rocky terrain. Stay hydrated; drinking plenty of water throughout the hike will help you get to the summit. Listen to your buddy; don’t push yourself too hard, especially if you’re experiencing altitude sickness. Respect the environment; leave no footprint by taking your trash back with you or disposing of it properly. If you can, bring trekking poles; they will be very helpful for your ascent.
Hiking Acatenango is one of the most incredible adventures in Guatemala, and the views of Fuego Volcano erupting in the background make it all worth it, but remember that it is physically demanding, and it involves inherent risks; don’t take it lightly.
