Established in 1776 following the devastating earthquake that destroyed Antigua, Guatemala City served as the country’s capital throughout the Spanish colonial era. Its history, however, goes much beyond this time frame. Kaminaljuyú is a pre-Columbian archeological site at the center of the city, which was constructed on old Mayan foundations. Guatemala City now is a tale of tenacity and change, exhibiting a smooth fusion of colonial influences, contemporary growth, and Mayan tradition.
