Lake Atitlán

One of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

Considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world by the famous writer Aldous Huxley, the lake is 144 km from Guatemala City and is, without a doubt, the most important natural attraction in Sololá and one of the best known in Guatemala. Three spectacular volcanoes, Tolimán, Atitlán and San Pedro, form the natural setting of the lake. It has a surface area of 125 square km and is located 1,560 meters above sea level. The lake complements its beauty with panoramic roads, beaches, riverside towns, mountains and volcanoes. It offers excellent opportunities for sport fishing, sailing, kayaking, free flying, water skiing and nature recreation, as well as visiting the Mayan villages in the area.

As evidence of its volcanic origins, Lake Atitlán is situated in a large caldera that was created thousands of years ago by a catastrophic volcanic explosion. The lake, which is home to ancient Mayan settlements that have maintained their customs to this day, has long been considered a cradle of civilization. The Nahuatl language is the source of the area’s name, which translates to “at the water,” indicating both its profound cultural value and its status as a Maya sacred site.

Lake Atitlán has a rich history, steeped in Mayan mythology and colonial heritage. The ancient Maya believed the lake was the birthplace of the cosmos, and its shores are dotted with archaeological sites.

Around the lake there are several indigenous communities, each with it unique traditions, customs and colorful clothes. Explore the charming villages of Santiago Atitlán, San Juan La Laguna, San Pedro La Laguna, and Panajachel, where you can witness traditional weaving, pottery, woodcarving, bee keeping, etc. You can also enjoy different activities, such as kayaking, volcano hikes, spiritual retreats, zip line, paddle board, swimming, etc.
