If you are planning a trip to Guatemala during the spring months, you’ve picked a truly magical window. This is the time when the “Land of Eternal Spring” truly earns its name. Whether you’re coming for the world-class cultural traditions, a corporate retreat, or a rugged adventure, here is what each month has in store for you.
March, the month of tradition and Incense is arguably the most intense and beautiful month in Guatemala. The air in Antigua Guatemala and the Highlands smells like copal incense and corozo (a tropical flower used for decorations).
The Main Event: Semana Santa (Holy Week). This year Semana Santa starts on March 29 so you can travel at the end of the month and beginning of April to enjoy the traditions of the week. The processions and the famous hand-made sawdust carpets (alfombras) dominate the atmosphere.
The Vibe you will find is busy, vibrant, and deeply spiritual. This is “high season” therefore, if you are organizing transport or corporate groups, booking in advance is non-negotiable. The streets of Antigua close for processions, so having a local transport expert is key to getting around the detours!
It’s the final peak month for Whale Watching on the Pacific Coast. If you want to see the giants before they head north, March is your best bet.
As we move into April, the heat picks up, and the sky stays a brilliant, cloudless blue. This is the heart of the dry season. Also, April 1 to 5 is part of Holy Week.
The weather is perfect for the beach or the jungle. It’s the ideal time to visit the Tikal ruins or Yaxhá in Petén—the jungle canopy is dry, making the trails easy to navigate.
The Pacific Coast (Monterrico and Puerto San José) is at its warmest. It’s “summer” for locals, meaning the vibe is relaxed, tropical, and perfect for sunset boat rides.
Bring high-SPF sunscreen and light linen clothing. If you’re in the city for business, the mornings are crisp, but the afternoons can get quite hot.
May marks one of my favorite transformations in Guatemala, the arrival of the “Green Season” (the first rains).
After months of sun, the first afternoon showers arrive. Almost overnight, the brown hills turn a lush, electric green. It’s like the earth is taking a long-awaited breath.
A benefit to travel during May is that you’ll have iconic spots like Lake Atitlán or Semuc Champey almost to yourself. Many hotels and transport services offer discounts, making it the best month for budget-conscious travelers or large corporate groups looking for luxury at a better price.
Don’t let the word “rainy” scare you. Usually, it’s sunny all morning, with a refreshing tropical downpour for an hour or two in the late afternoon—perfect for enjoying a cup of Guatemalan coffee while watching the rain from a cozy café.
Whether you are navigating the crowded streets of Antigua in March or the mountain roads of the Highlands in the May rains, reliable transport is your best friend. Guatemala’s topography is stunning but challenging; having a professional driver who knows the shortcuts and the weather patterns makes all the difference between a stressful trip and a seamless one.
